SZEWCZYK (SHEWCHUK), VERA

An angel received her wings to fly to heaven and be cradled in the arms of her Creator.

In memory of Vera…a devoted wife, loving Mom, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, friend and a beautiful person.

Vera passed away peacefully, Saturday, July 9th, 2011 at the Pioneer Manor at the age of 86 years. She was married to Stefan nearly 66 years and had four children, Walter (wife Helen), George (wife Darlene), Anna Maria Peca (husband Ben) and Joseph (predeceased at birth). She is remembered by her six grandchildren, Steven, Angela (husband Paul), Keri, Robert (wife Josée), Kristine, Adriano and six great grandchildren, Michael, Alex, Daniel, Samantha, Alexis and Olivia.

Vera came to Sudbury with Stefan in 1951. She was very active in the Ukrainian community, singing in women’s and mixed choirs, sitting on the executive of the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League for many years, and a devout member of St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church. She cooked at Villa Maria’s summer camp and worked part-time managing the cafeteria at College Notre Dame. She was a great cook and baker, well known for her tortes, pies and cheesecakes. She enjoyed reading, traveling, planting flowers, embroidering and sewing beautiful dresses in the wee hours of the morning prior to occasions, where she and Stefan loved to dance. She had a wonderful sense of humour and a contagious laugh. Her love of animals led her to feed and care for not only her pets but any resident strays, raccoons or birds. Vera was one classy lady. She dressed her best at all times, never allowing anyone to see her without lipstick. Our many treasured memories of Vera are stored as presents, waiting to be unwrapped and shared when needed.

The family expresses its heartfelt appreciation to the amazing staff in the Cedar Wing of Pioneer Manor, Father Marian, Chaplain Allison Dean, Dr. Kuchtaruk, Dr. St-Martin, the staff at the Alzheimer’s Association, and the Red Cross and Bayshore Nursing careworkers who have helped us manage in the last years.
